On top of the usual VGA and HDMI interfaces, this computer monitor comes equipped with a DVI port and an Audio-in connection. CONS

OUR VERDICT

You can't do better than the BenQ GW2270HM computer monitor on a 100-pound budget. Though the price is entry-level, the monitor's specs, features, and overall performance are at least mid-range. It doesn't hurt that the model comes fitted with speakers either.

Samsung U28E590D 28-Inch

Stylish Solution for Your Room

Today, it is difficult to find a cool-looking 4K monitor at a price like of this model. The Samsung U28E590D may look minimalistic and simple, yet at a closer look, the frame appears to be made of metal. One of the most stylish solutions in this model's design would be its stand, which is also made of metal. It's a truly elegant and neat monitor, it will look great on your office desk or in your room at home.

The high quality of any media content displayed on the screen is achieved with a TN panel. It has a response time of 1ms, which means you won't see any glitch while watching powerful fast-paced scenes. Maximum brightness value is 370 cd/m², which means you will feel comfortable even when the environment around you is bright. All the colours look natural due to 100% sRGB coverage. The combination of these specifications would suit the designers and various artists perfectly. Moreover, the screen has 8 million pixels, which will help you notice any detail on the image.

Multiple Screens on a Single Screen

Other unique advantages of this Samsung 4K monitor would be two similar features: Picture-By-Picture and Picture-In-Picture 2.0. The first feature allows you to display two screens from different sources simultaneously, one near another. Picture-In-Picture 2.0 is capable of rendering the second window as a much smaller one on top of the first one of the normal size. You could use these features in numerous ways, for example, when you need to google something up while watching a movie.

Sustaining Long Sessions

Due to the Eye Saver Mode and the Flicker-Free feature, you will be able to use the computer for longer periods of time, as your eyes won't start feeling tired right away. What Eye Saver Mode does, is that it decreases the blue colour intensity. It is especially useful for those who spend a lot of time on the Internet, reading or working with text files.

Dell S2419H

Every Detail

With the Dell S2419H, it is just as much about the aesthetics as it is about the model's performance and functionality. "Striking looks", as the people behind the model have so eloquently put it, is really what separates the monitor from every other mid-range screen on the market right now. The practically borderless display will allow you to enjoy every detail of the on-screen beauty without any immersion-breaking borders.

Add to that the elegant glossy back cover and you have yourself a monitor that will be perfectly able to complement your desk with its sleek, modern, and chic design.

And it's not like the aforementioned "on-screen beauty" is a huge stretch either. With greater than 99% sRGB colour coverage, the monitor delivers vibrant, rich, and authentic tones and shades, with a deep colour scheme and precise image expression.

After all, this is an IPS panel we're talking about here. With these panels, the colour accuracy is always there and the contrast ratio never fails to deliver. The viewing angles are there as well, so the picture never starts to appear washed out when you change the angle.

Review of Dell S2419H 24-inch IPS Monitor (FullHD, 60Hz)

Powerful Speakers

People often don't care whether the monitor comes equipped with speakers or not and, when it does, they just as often sleep on them. We don't blame them though. Way more often than not, these speakers are passable at best. But this isn't the case here.

The dual 5W speakers, tuned by Waves MaxxAudio, are about as powerful and technologically impressive as they come. These speakers are able to produce lifelike, detail, and spacious audio, with quality transience and rumble. With them, you'll be able to enjoy your favourite music, films, and games in a whole new light and you won't have to buy a separate pair of speakers, making the monitor great value for your money.

Nobody likes a bunch of cords tangling around here and there. With this model, you won't have to worry about that. It will allow you to easily move between work and play without having to rearrange the cords, all thanks to the built-in dual HDMI connectivity ports.

No quality modern-day computer monitor is complete without eye-care tech. Here, the tech is represented by ComfortView, a flicker-free feature that works wonders filtering out harmful blue light emissions. You'll be able to spend more time in front of the monitor without experiencing significant eye fatigue.

With all that in mind, what we have here is a solid, well-rounded, visually appealing computer monitor with good specs, respectable performance, and streamlined aesthetics. Plus, the model can just as well double as a TV set.

BenQ BL2480T

Ergonomically Sound

One thing we can say about BenQ is that they seldom fail to identify the needs of their customers and come up with a fitting solution.

Take BenQ BL2480T, for instance. They market it as a business monitor and, of course, it isn't because the monitor can't be used for anything else. On the contrary, the model in question delivers in a variety of aspects and is a pretty good overall screen no matter how you slice it.

No, it is because there are certain demands that an office/business monitor has to meet and we'd say that BenQ BL2480T does a pretty good job of that.

Office monitor has to be ergonomic above anything else, ergonomic enough to be comfortable and convenient for any user who spends 8 hours a day staring at it. And, with this screen, you shouldn't have any issues achieving that. You can adjust its pivot, height, tilt, stroke, and swivel, so you should be able to position the display where it fits you best.

Admittedly, you may have a hard time fixing the monitor to the stand, and we don't know if it is an issue with the monitor, stand, or both. But once you get that out of the way, it will be easy to make this screen fit your needs an preferences.

Another part that makes this model such an ergonomically sound option is the slick frameless design. The 6.63-mm wide edge-to-edge bezel allows you to have considerably more workspace at your disposal, so you won't have to rearrange everything on your desk in order to fit the monitor.

Review of BenQ BL2480T 24-inch IPS Monitor (FullHd, 83Hz)

Less Detriment to Your Eyes

Having said all of that, this is still a computer monitor, so ergonomics alone would not have gotten it very far. But, like we've said earlier, it isn't like the model has nothing else to offer. One aspect of this screen that makes it equally suitable for a variety of applications is the Eye Care technology.

Under this umbrella term hides Brightness Intelligence, Low Blue Light, and Flicker-Free, the familiar to many arrange of technologies that minimise the harmful blue light, reduce flickering, and customise the amount of green and red displayed on the screen. All of these technologies help reduce the strain on your eyes and allow you to spend more time in front of your screen without as big of a detriment to your health.

Panel-wise, there isn't that much to discuss here. What you get is a pretty standard IPS 1080p full HD display, with the usual IPS quality of colour reproduction, great viewing angles, solid maximum brightness, and decent contrast.

In short, BenQ BL2480T is a great minimalistic display that offers both aesthetics and functionality. It isn't the most versatile computer monitor but it is definitely one of the best office/business screens in its price range. It will allow you to spend more time in front of a screen with less of a detriment to your eyes.

Dell SE2219H

Budget Never Looked so Good

The Dell SE2219H is a budget computer monitor. You can purchase it for less than 100 pounds, so there's nothing exactly groundbreaking here. That being said, considering the model's price, its specs are surprisingly solid.

First and foremost, this is an IPS panel. With IPS panels come certain advantages: the contrast ratio will be a cut above the model's TN competition, with far better blacks, the colours will look a lot more realistic and accurate and a lot less washed out, and the viewing angles will be practically limitless. A monitor like that is great for graphic design and any other similar application.

While the picture will look good, the screen itself shouldn't trail too much behind either. It has a really thin bezel with nice little elegant touches, incorporating that sleek, modern look that meshes really well with just about any living space. The stand here is smaller than usual, so it gives you a little more desk space to work with without compromising strength and stability.

On top of that, the model comes equipped with a built-in power supply unit, allowing you to further reduce clutter and make your workspace look nice and neat.

Review of Dell SE2219H 21.5-inch IPS Monitor (FullHD, 60Hz)

Where Aesthetics Meet Practicality

With budget computer monitors, there are always sacrifices and, as impressive as this model is, we can't say that it is necessarily flawless. For one, the screen isn't packing built-in speakers. Generally speaking (sorry, we had to), we don't really care about that since built-in audio systems seldom manage to deliver quality sound but, considering that this is a budget model, there are definitely people out there who could've used a free pair of speakers.

Another little detail that we aren't too excited about is the monitor's interface action. More specifically, the fact that the model comes fitted with a VGA and HDMI port, that's it. It's not a huge issue since HDMI is as universal of a protocol as they come but it definitely wouldn't hurt to add a DVI or DisplayPort connection next time.

We don't have any complaints in the eye-care department though. The company's ComfortView feature is as effective as ever here, reducing the harmful blue lights. The same sentiment can be very well extended towards the model's flicker-free feature. It lets you optimise eye comfort and minimise distractions, all while keeping eye fatigue at a minimum.

Bottom line, the Dell SE2219H definitely has its moments. Its colour performance is nothing to complain about. The model looks good enough to complement just about any space. Plus, its design is as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical and convenient.

BenQ GW2270HM

Sharp Colour Performance

The BenQ GW2270HM is another excellent budget computer monitor. In fact, it might very well be the best monitor below the 100-quid price point. There are many little and not-so-little details here that contribute to its impressive performance and overall utility. A good place to start would be the model's static contrast ratio.

Tripling the usual IPS and TN performance in that area, the monitor's blacks are remarkable. You'll be able to experience and enjoy a level of subtlety that very few mid-range models are able to replicate. The shades will look sharp and the overall image will be as immersive and dynamic as ever. It is a VA panel we're dealing with here but it doesn't really have the usual VA disadvantages.

The model's 4ms response time is great (considering that this is a budget, practically entry-level monitor and a VA panel), the refresh rate can be set between the usual 60 and 83Hz, again, not bad for its class.

VA panels seldom have any issues with maximum brightness and the model at hand is not an exception, boasting a respectable 250 cd/m² performance in that regard.

With consumer electronics in general and monitors in particular, you can seldom separate the quality from quantity. For example, here, with the model's 8-bit colour table and its ability to render 16.7 million colour shades at the same time, you can very well expect authentic colour performance, silky transitions, and excellent overall image quality.

Review of BenQ GW2270HM 21.5-inch Monitor (FullHD, 83Hz)

Pleasant Surprises

Again, the BenQ GW2270HM conceals many pleasant surprises. For instance, the model comes packing two relatively powerful speakers. Well, even relatively powerful is a stretch considering their 1W performance but the fact that they're there in the first place is impressive and the sound quality here isn't all that shabby.

Another pleasant surprise is the model's ample interface options. There are the usual VGA and HDMI ports, the former for legacy GPUs and the latter to support just about any playback device on the market today. On top of that, this computer monitor comes equipped with a DVI port and an Audio-in connection, an impressive collection for a budget model.

Just about the only area where, for our taste, this product disappoints is the aesthetics. For an otherwise modern device, the model's frame is relatively large and the bezel is a little too thick.

Apart from that, you can't do better than the BenQ GW2270HM computer monitor on a 100-pound budget. Though the price is entry-level, the monitor's specs, features, and overall performance are at least mid-range. It doesn't hurt that the model comes fitted with speakers either.

What Is a Computer Monitor?

A computer monitor is a hardware peripheral that displays images or videos produced by the computer's graphics card (also called GPU). Computer monitors differ by many parameters, so the choice of the right device may be quite tricky. To make it a tad easier for you, we have thoroughly scoured the consumer electronics market and picked five computer monitors that should be able to satisfy your needs and preferences. Some of these monitors will be great for gaming purposes. Some of the monitors are better suited for office applications. Certain monitors will prove a better choice for streaming multimedia content. And, of course, some models are more balanced than others, so you don't have to settle for some singular-purpose device if you don't want to. Everything from the monitor's specs to the size of the panel will help you determine their primary application and help you make the right choice.

It is typical of many monitors that their built-in speakers produce quite a mediocre sound and lack power. If it's the case, it won't hurt to purchase an additional set of speakers. And if your job or hobby involves a lot of typing, make sure to acquire an ergonomic keyboard.

What Features to Compare

Today, the majority of computer monitors have displays based on so-called liquid crystals, so they are really thin. Older LCD monitors have recently been replaced by the cutting-edge LED ones. There are several parameters you need to take into account when choosing a LED-backlit computer monitor.

Screen size

The first thing you should pick is the screen size which is measured in inches. No need to say, it's much more comfortable to watch films, play video games, render images, etc on a large display. However, large monitors require a more powerful graphics card and if your PC is rather outdated and get a brand-new 24-inch monitor - the whole system will not run well. Smaller PC displays are better in terms of price and they can be used with older hardware - in this case, you can choose an 18-inch or 19-inch computer monitor. For gamers and films fans, we recommend picking large 27-inch LED monitors.

Resolution

The next thing to pay attention to is the resolution of a monitor for PC - it is a total number of dots (or pixels) on the surface of the screen. The more of them an LED monitor has, the better image you will get. In all, you must choose the PC monitors that support the Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels) and higher. The advantage is obvious - you can open several windows and work with them without any inconveniences. For example, if your monitor for PC supports the resolution of 2560x1440p, you can open with 4 windows on your desktop. The most common types of resolution are 1366x768p, 1920x1080p, and 2560x1440p.

Image quality

Also, you should think of image quality a computer monitor provides. It depends on the panel type a screen has. There are 2 most widespread panel technologies: TN and IPS. A TN panel is the most affordable one and it is the best for using a computer at home or at work. However, if you are a professional user who needs to work with graphics, you had better choose a monitor that has an IPS or MVA panels. They provide a far better image quality than a TN technology - the image is bright and vivid. Also, the viewing angles of an IPS panel are far superior to a TN. For instance, a usual IPS has viewing angles of 178/178 degrees and the maximal brightness of 270 cd./sq. m.

Interfaces

Finally, consider all the interfaces every PC monitor offers; in other words, look at the ports and slots it has. There are several essential interfaces any decent computer monitor should have. A DVI slot is usually used to connect large monitors and it provides good and clear image quality. An HDMI serves to transfer a digital video and multi-channel audio signal. A VGA is the only analogue interface for PC monitors and the only disadvantage of this type of connection is a deterioration of picture quality if you connect a digital device. Also, a USB (video) connection is important - a PC monitor can display videos from an external drive through this connection. Summing up, DVI and HDMI are the most important connectivity options to be taken into account.
