You can use the USB Rec feature to transfer your favourite tracks from CDs to flash drives, preserving old songs in pretty good 128 kbps quality. The files are converted to MP3 automatically, no programming required.

CONS

The player might fail to read some of the more scratched up discs.

OUR VERDICT

This Sony boombox is a modern take on the old device, offering powerful speakers, a USB port, and a music conversion feature for the preservation of old tunes. It's a bit too bulky for carrying around on picnics but it's a good choice of a home audio player.

OUR VERDICT

The Groov-e boombox runs on batteries longer than any other model we've seen and is so lightweight that it'd simply be wrong not to take it along on picnics and BBQs. It's also a good fit if you want to get your child or grandparent listening to their favourite music as the controls are as simple as they get.

Sony ZSRS70BTB.CEK

Upgrading the Past

Got some old CDs with nostalgic tunes from your past that you can’t listen to anymore because the disc is all scratched up and hanging on by a thread? You don’t have to leave those sweet melodies behind as the Sony ZSRS70BTB.CEK helps take them with you on the road to the future.

This portable boombox has a USB Rec feature that lets you rip tracks straight from the CD to your flash drive, converting them to MP3. Of course, the quality won’t be as good as lossless files you get nowadays but it’s still your favourite songs, finally available in a modern format. You might have to give that old CD a few tries though as the audio system doesn’t always recognise the discs with a lot of wear.

Oh, and don’t think that this bad boy can only play CDs or tracks from flash drives. Just like the good old boomboxes, this model has an AUX port for playing tunes off of other devices and hooking up speakers. Yeah, the 2 built-in ones are nice but you need something more powerful to get the party bumping, right? Oh, and it also has Bluetooth capabilities so you can stream songs from your phone, made easy thanks to the NFC One-touch. The latter syncs devices without any need for your input so you don’t need to read any instructions before DJing!

While a boombox may not seem like such a modern audio system choice these days, the Sony SZRS70BTB.CEK is certainly a good argument for using one. It syncs with other devices, helps you recover old tunes, and not a single party will stay quiet when the beats are blasting through its speakers.

Roberts CD9959

Feel the Bass

Music is all about the energy and the drive it gives you, especially rock with its powerful guitars and bass. However, if you want to really feel those good vibrations and enjoy the bass, we recommend getting the Roberts CD9959. This powerful boombox has a Deep Bass Boost function that’s going to really bring out the low frequencies. It is, of course, optional as you don’t want the bass to be that loud at all times.

We do have to admit that the aforementioned function and two pretty powerful speakers seem to leave the Roberts CD9959 eating through batteries like candy. It’s definitely best to keep it plugged into a socket but if you have to take the audio system out for a picnic - make sure to pack enough batteries.

The Roberts CD9959 has both a CD player and a built-in LW/MW/FM-wave receiver so it’s going to be a good fit both if you’re a curated library type and looking to discover new tunes. Similarly, you can enjoy the music with a couple of friends or keep it to yourself thanks to a headphone jack.

It’s always nice when a music player is made for those that value good sound and the Bass Boost function on the Roberts CD9959 shows precisely that kind of care. While the boombox is pretty hard on the batteries, it delivers solid sound quality and improves the listening experience.

Sony SON2651

Play Yourself a Lullabye

It can be nice to drift off to sleep not in total silence but to the sounds of your favourite music. Sure, it may not be an option if you like black metal or don’t have a mini CD boombox to play the tunes for you but we’ve got the latter issue covered. The Sony SON2651 has a sleep timer ranging from 15 to 90 minutes so you can go to dreamland while your tracks play.

But that’s not the only feature that makes the Sony SON2651 stand out as the boombox also has not only a tape deck but a cassette recording feature. This means that you can play old albums and record new music on cassettes which are making a comeback in popularity. It may not be the optimal format but if you like the vintage feel, the SON2651 is one of the few models that will help keep the music going on that format.

We did feel like the SON2651 was a bit clunky due to the design, which leaves the audio system looking larger than most. It’s actually relatively lightweight but the look of this model definitely harkens back to the 90’s. In the end, though, we can forgive average looks when the features are excellent and that’s why the Sony SON2651 deserves a spot on the list. It’s a music lover’s dream and those that can’t imagine spending a single hour without their favourite tunes will love this audio player.

Groov-e GVPS713BK

Take the Party with You

No outdoor party is complete without a boombox blasting radio tunes or playing favourite CDs, the wind carrying the music from one listener to another. But nobody likes lugging around a heavy audio system so why not try the Groov-e GVPS713BK instead? This small model weighs just 1.4 kg and you can take it anywhere thanks to a convenient carrying handle.

But weight and handles aren’t the only factors that make a boombox truly portable. It also needs to be energy-efficient to make sure the music doesn’t stop until you want it to. The GVPS713BK works just fine on 6 C batteries and it actually lasts pretty long on a single set, even with the volume all the way up.

Sadly, this model is not without its flaws. For example, you might get tired of CDs and try to go for some radio and, in that case, we recommend being very careful with the antenna. The attachment seems pretty fragile and could snap off if not lowered properly or pulled too hard.

We also really liked the speakers on this model, which might not replace a surround sound system but offer pretty loud sound without any crackling.

All that said, the Groov-e GVPS713BK is a well-balanced and affordable model that can serve both as a portable audio player for outings and as a private music source thanks to the built-in headphone jack. It’s easy to control and can thus be operated by kids and seniors.

Lenco SCD-24 B

Riding the Radio Waves

It’s tough to say whether a truly perfect day off exists but kicking back in your backyard and listening to the radio for some light summer tunes is certainly up there. While many portable boomboxes seem to have trouble catching the signal in big cities due to interference, the Lenco SCD-24 B and its telescopic antenna will bring you the music no matter what.

This player is set up to intercept waves from a broader range than most others, a big plus if you want to catch a local station from a neighbouring town. If you’re not that picky, though, you’ll still be happy to know that all signals are cleared upon reception so you won’t get any annoying crackling or other unwelcome noises.

We did feel like the SCD-24 B was a bit quiet compared to some other models we’ve tried, which means that you’re not going to bust it out at a party and blow the roof off. But it is perfectly fine for personal listening, especially if you take advantage of the integrated headphones jack.

While you can use it as a CD player instead of a radio-oriented boombox, we feel that the Lenco SCD-24 B shines as a wave-surfing music player thanks to its crystal clear signal reception. You can enjoy your favourite stations even if they’re usually not available in your area, which can be a bonus for music lovers with particular preferences.

What Is a Boombox?

If you love to listen and share your favourite music tracks with your friends, there is no better device than a boombox. This type of device usually features a powerful set of low and high-frequency speakers to create a stereo sound that can be extremely loud.

When you have a party outdoors, in the forest, on the beach, or simply in your backyard, you don’t often have means to set up a stereo system at your immediate disposal. That is why boomboxes are still so popular. The parties revolve around them as they set the course and the mood of the holiday.

Modern models are capable of playing the music via wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which is the most important solution that allowed these devices to survive the test of time. All you have to do is just connect to the speakers via your phone, pick a track you want to hear, and press play - everything else is just an extra. Other optional features include AUX input, USB playback, or a CD player. As you'd imagine, more connectivity options mean that you can connect more devices to your speakers.

That said, if you are looking for more sophisticated ways to listen to your favourite music, you may also consider purchasing shower speakers or floor speakers to spice up your home audio system.
