What is an Instant Camera

Perhaps each of us remembers those times when we used to share our photos with friends in printed version instead of posting them on Facebook, Instagram or any other social network. We had real photo books with real photos, all glossy and shiny smelling of fresh film. Back at those times, Polaroid company made it possible to print a photo shortly after it's being taken by using a self-developing film. Alas, in the present days, most people choose to keep digital pics instead of those on a film, and that's a big shame. If you share our opinion and would like to have some printed photos too, opt for an instant camera. Modern instant cameras differ from their ancestors in weight and are available in analogue and digital variations. What's more, the size of a printed pic doesn't exceed the dimensions of an ordinary credit card so you can easily keep some notable photos in your purse.

Below, we're going to review 5 best instant cameras and specify the benefits of each model, thereby making a choice for you much easier. For those looking for a camera support for making stable shots, we can offer our review on the great camera tripods as well.

Instax Mini 70 Camera with 10 Shots

Classic Conception and Modern Technologies

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 is an analogue-type instant camera that works with the company's special Instant Color Film "instax mini" that has an 86 x 54 mm size. Simply put, this film is a rectangular piece of a photo paper with special chemicals on it. After the shot, the paper slides out from the camera side, and after a few moments, the picture is developed on it exactly like it did with old-school polaroids. The final image on it will have the 62 x 46 mm in size. That way, the paper will have a small white frame around the picture that you can use for writing the date, names of the people on the shot or whatever you want.

Why the best pick, you might ask? The major difference that puts the camera above the rest lies in its functionality. You can shoot in macro, landscape, fill-in flash or Hi-Key modes. The first three are pretty much self-explanatory. As for the Hi-Key mode, it adds more brightness to the shot similar to longer exposure on compact or DSLR cameras. When you are not sure, what mode to choose, simply select the Auto - and the camera will try to take a shot with the most optimal parameters by itself. Also, you can set the timer and place the camera on some steady support such as tripod or handrail to get a steady crisp shot or a photo of yourself. As a tribute to the modern tendencies, the camera body has a small mirror on the front for taking selfies as well. Although the device is analogue type, it still requires 2 CR2 batteries (included) to operate. They are used for moving the shutter, rolling out the film, and for powering the flash and small digital display that shows the number of film slides left. Finally, the camera comes with 10 pieces of the film, allowing you to use it right away. We were really happy with the resulting shots, so we eagerly recommend this Fujifilm Instax mini 70 as a prime choice in our instant cameras review.

Polaroid PIC-300 Instant Film Camera

As Easy As It Gets

The Polaroid PIC-300 is a lovely reminder of all those great things associated with instant analog photography. The operational principle of the instant camera is similar to old models launched in 1990 with the only big difference - now you can choose between several exposure settings to customize each shot. This way, with all configurations set properly, you'll never run a risk of coming up with too dark or too exposed pics. They will be all crisp and clear! You will also like the indicator that shows the number of photos left and the fact that the camera is fed by 4 AA batteries. No need to look for a power outlet or wait for hours until a battery is charged. The manufacturer has chosen an interesting way of switching the cam on - you only need to pull the lens and the cam's ready to shoot. Enjoy your old-fashioned photo cards and share them with your friends or store them in your family albums.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 8

Cost-effective Camera

The Instax Mini 8 is yet another instant camera manufactured by the world renowned company Fujifilm. In our opinion, it is quite convenient to hold the camera in hands owing to its round shaped design and it looks really fantastic in sum. There are only 2 control buttons located on the housing: on/off and shutter release. We should note that a user can turn the device off just by pushing back the lens manually. Quite unusual engineering solution, no doubt. Another interesting thing we like in the instant camera is the system of exposure settings selecting. There is a special ring around the lens that shifts between different exposure levels when you twist it. It does resemble the process of choosing the right aperture setting or zooming an object on modern digital cameras. There are 5 different exposure levels to choose from. At the back of this Fujifilm instant camera you will find a film compartment and an indicator of unexposed films. The camera operates on 2 AA batteries as almost all instant cameras but the manufacturer has designed it with auto shut-off option in order to preserve batteries power. All in all, the instant camera will definitely become an irreplaceable device for any occasion when you want to capture the perfect image.

This model comes fitted with 2 AA batteries and a wrist strap, however, you are free to purchase a rechargeable battery separately and use them. What's more, the Instax Mini 8 is available in black, yellow, grape, raspberry, blue, pink, and white colours.

Polaroid Snap Instant Digital Camera

Instant Shots Done Differently

The Polaroid Snap Instant Digital Camera marks a new step in the field of instant photography. At first, it may seem that it works as a classic instant camera that delivers a piece of a photo paper, on which the image is developed in less than a minute. However, the images are processed via a digital camera sensor and a digital microprocessor. Thanks to this technology, the camera can print a Wallet-sized paper at 76 x 51 mm. In that case, the image will fill the whole surface of the photo paper without the white frames. Nevertheless, the camera has an option to create a classic polaroid image with it by pressing the corresponding button on its body - and the next developed photo will have the white edges.

Speaking of controls, the camera has a colour selector. By rotating it, you can choose between colour, black-and-white, and sepia modes. The digital technologies made it possible to not only develop the film with the camera but also save the photos on a MicroSD card with up to 32 GB memory. That way, you can take either true Lomo photographs and get them on paper right away or send your friends a digital copy almost as fast, as the image development on an instant film. To our taste, this is a really handy instant camera for taking atmospheric old-school style photos, selfies, or simply funny moments with your friends.

Fujifilm Instax Wide 300

Instant Selfies

Modern instant cameras cannot be compared to those high-end digital cameras by their functionality and pictures quality. And they shouldn't be since instant models are meant to bring joy, not high-quality professional pics. However, there are some devices like the Fujifilm Instax Wide 300 Instant Camera, that feature a wide variety of settings and shoot pretty quality pics. The given model has several focus modes that can be pre-set with the help of a lens ring dial. Using this dial you will be able to switch between normal and macro modes in seconds. What's more, those who like making "selfie" will highly appreciate the clip-on attachment with a little mirror that should be fixed to the front lens. Thus, users can make perfect selfies, welfies, ussies, relfies and other fancy photos. For your convenience, Fujifilm Instax is designed with an LCD screen and a number of control buttons located at the camera's backing. Here, "L/D" button is designed for pre-setting exposure compensation or in other words photo brightness adjustment. On the LCD screen, you will also find some other useful information such as a number of unexposed films, lighten-darken control, and fill-in flash mode. In all other respects, Fujifilm Instax doesn't differ a lot from its counterparts. It runs on 4 AA batteries and utilises standard 10 film packs.
