Compromises are Unnecessary
The Greenworks Tools 1301507UC is mean. Where most machines are forced to sacrifice, choosing between performance, controls, and overall convenience, this string trimmer shines across the entire board. To begin with, its 40-volt battery offers the most tremendous output, whacking the toughest, most stubborn weeds with unparalleled ease. Well, the battery is not whacking them, this is not what we're implying here. What we're saying is that the battery powers the machine, enabling this output. What's more, the battery boasts fade-free performance without memory loss after charging. You can easily attach and remove the model's battery when necessary, but enough about this component already.
As important as it is, the battery is not more important than the trimmer's construction, starting with the start (apologies, we had to). To start the machine, you're not using tangled cables, you're not entertaining any tripping hazards, you're not dealing with any complicated setup mechanisms. Press the button and let loose, enabling this compact machinery piece to do its job.
The compact part, by the way, is quite surprising considering the model's output yet, measuring 28 x 97 x 18 centimetres, with the 97 value referring to its length, the machine hangs with the "compact" crowd without standing out. That being said, weighing 4.5 kilogrammes, this string trimmer might be the least lightweight representative of that crowd.
From Trimming to Scything
Setting the above rambling aside, the model's biggest selling point is probably its 2-in-1 disposition. As a trimmer, the machine can handle sensitive garden areas, including lawn edges. Then, you can switch to the scythe mode, cutting tall grass and even small bushes and shrubs. The aforementioned battery enables trimming long grass around the lawn, precise lawn edging, and clipping tough grass. While you're cutting, the machine will be producing minimum noise and vibrations, keeping you comfortable throughout.
Addressing the smaller details, the 25-centimetre cutting blade and the shoulder strap will be offering easy handling, whereas the two-piece aluminium rod, featuring steel connection, will be providing the necessary stability. Still, these components are not as appealing as the rotating handle, allowing you to easily reach any angle without bending.
Bottom line, the Greenworks Tools 1301507U offers safe, effective, and efficient trimming, cutting, and scything, managing any garden size without hiccups.
Bosch AFS 23-37
A SIMPLE TOOL FOR COMPLEX TASKS
When it comes to Bosch, it’s about German quality and well-thought practical solutions. You’ll hardly find any Bosch tool that fails to do the job it's meant for. In most cases, Bosch tools even overcome your expectations, consistently delivering high performance within many years. The same is true for the Bosch AFS 23-37 brush cutter. If you need a reliable workhorse to regularly tackle a variety of garden tasks being sure it will never let you down, look no further.
At a glance, the tool looks pretty much like other brush cutters featuring a similar handheld design. Yet, it has a number of advantages over other models. Made of premium quality materials, it is dependable and built to last. The next thing we cannot leave unnoticed is an ultra-lightweight tool construction. Weighing only 5.3 kg, this brush cutting machine can be easily handled by men and women alike allowing them to work without fatigue and causing no strain to their arms. The power unit and the attachment are fitted together without any extra tool, simply using the nut and the locking button. The adjustable shoulder strap and the strap mount provide optimal tool balance for different body sizes and heights while an ergonomic loop-and-bar handle adds user comfort during operation.
But don’t let this simplicity fool you. Behind a lightweight body, there is a powerful 950W motor generating enough power and torque to cope with various vegetation types and delivering impressive cutting performance to get the job done. The combination cutting system makes it easy to change between an extra-strong line and blade. The Bosch AFS 23-37 brush cutter uses 3.5 mm fixed cutting lines to ensure high endurance cutting without having to frequently change the line. However, if you need a spare line, it will be always at hand, since spare lines are conveniently stored inside the safety bar. The line is suitable for long coarse grass and weeds whereas a super sharp three-tip blade is used more on nettles, brambles, and shrubs.
Easy and convenient to use, the AFS 23-37 electric brush cutter from Bosch will let you enjoy the petrol-matching performance without extra weight, fuel mixing, and starting troubles of gas models.
POWERFUL YET QUIET
It’s common knowledge that most power tools produce considerably high noise level during work. All leading manufacturers strive for reducing vibration and noise related to engine operation but not all of them succeed. Petrol models still remain rather noisy and sometimes even require wearing ear defenders during work. Of course, noisy operation causes discomfort to the operator, to say nothing of family members and neighbours. Moreover, in a certain way, it will limit your working hours only to daytime when everybody is awake or at work.
Ryobi OLT1832 ONE+
All About Versatility
The Ryobi OLT1832 ONE+ comes from humble beginnings yet the machine is not as modest as you'd presume from the modest price. Sure, the flaws are there. The plastic blade attachments can be difficult to adjust. The noise levels reach ~95 decibels, which's not terrible but we have seen less noisy string trimmers before. Nevertheless, the machine has its moments too, not excluding its 2.3-kilogramme weight (without the battery) and the long, 103-centimetre reach. It goes without saying, this length allows you to trim without moving around as much as you'd be with short trimmers. To add more, the machine lets you adjust the cutting width between 25 and 30 centimetres, switching between precision trimming and wide-angle cutting. You'll be able to go from clipping sensitive garden areas to whacking weeds above weeds above weeds.
More often than not, these machines make between edging and trimming pretty inconvenient. Here, using the EasyEdge™ tech, you can switch between these two modes via one button, enabling quick transitions and allowing you to continue cutting without taking unnecessary breaks.
Even without this tech though, versatility is the name of the game here. Aside from the adjustable cutting width and these quick mode transitions, the machine also adopts the company's signature three-position pivoting string head, offering more versatile trimming and giving you the means to easily change the cutting angle without slouching, crouching, and bending. Is that where the game concludes? Not quite. In the same vein, you have the telescoping boom and the length-adjustable handle, accommodating different user heights and, again, enabling you to trim and edge without bending.
Setting aside the multiple adjustment mechanisms, the machine's identity starts fading away. Sure, shipped as a bare unit, the product saves you money but that also means you have to purchase the battery and the charger separately. On the upside, the model's vibration uncertainty caps at 1.5 and the handle's at 0.15 m/s², so you can use the machine without experiencing noticeable fatigue and discomfort. Last but not least, the automatic line feed mechanism is fast and consistent, not unlike most budget string trimmers'.
In closing, the Ryobi OLT1832 ONE+ is the one, the one that will allow you to maintain the cleanest, most nice-looking garden without spending more than 65 quid.
WORX WG163E.9 GT3
The WORX WG163E.9 GT3 works, not bad might we add too. Sure, every model on this list works but none works as well and as much at this price, balancing precision, function, and practicality. The machine's construction is interesting enough that we can start virtually anywhere, so the 12-inch (30 centimetres) cutting width it is, offering more trimming in less time. Not unlike its much more expensive competition, this string trimmer also doubles as an edger, converting between two modes within seconds.
Now, when you go with the second mode, the machine offers dual-positioned in-line wheels, making edging the easiest task. Aside from increasing control and stability whilst edging, these wheels also reduce hand strain since you're not forced to hold the machine the entire time, letting them support the unit's weight. They're especially important because, unfortunately, this weight that we have touched upon has not been balanced evenly, so holding the machine feels awkward at times.
The in-line wheels make the model pretty unique in its own right but the same sentiment can also be extended towards the Command Feed mechanism. Feeding the line without delay, this system increases productivity and allows you to complete the most ambitious lawn/garden projects in a reduced timeframe. Plus, the 100% single-line feed means no bumping to extend the line, keeping the model's operation smooth.
From whacking weeds to trimming bushes to cutting shrubs, the garden often offers different tasks, making them uncomfortable at times. This is where the telescope shaft comes into play, providing easy height adjustments via the quick-release trigger lever. Meanwhile, the pivoting head that tilts 90 degrees will enable you to access hard-to-reach gaps and get into those awkward corners that most gardens seem to have.
Sometimes, string trimmers can be more dangerous than they have to be. This is not the case here though, owing to the model's adjustable space guard that not only protects the vegetation but also guides the edging mechanism. Now, not necessarily pertaining to the safety discussion but we'd also be remiss to overlook the auxiliary handle offering seven locking adjustments to guarantee maximum comfort whilst trimming, edging, and mowing.
To sum this up without going into unnecessary details, the WORX WG163E.9 GT3 exceeds even the most unreasonable expectations, matching and, at times, even outperforming premium string trimmers.
BLACK + DECKER BESTA530-GB
Trim & Edge® Facility
The BLACK + DECKER BESTA530-GB, despite the name, is not the best machine on this list. Now, the model has its advantages, more than enough to justify adding this product to the list. Yet, when you also take the price into account, these advantages become not as impressive as they could be and the disadvantages stop becoming as negligible as you'd find them at first. Generally speaking, the machine will enable trimming tall grass, tidying sharp lawn borders, and cutting overgrowth. But its performance is inconsistent.
On the one hand, the unit adopts the wheel guide, enabling precision edging. To add more, the extendable telescopic pole offers convenient height setting, allowing you to trim, cut, and edge without slouching and bending.
At the same time though, you can adjust the handle but, despite assuming the new position, you cannot trust the handle to remain there. In other words, the locking mechanism here is fiddly and unreliable, so the handle will wobble from time to time and you'll have to hold and apply pressure to secure the adjusted length, which is uncomfortable, to say the least.
On the upside, the Trim & Edge® facility lets you flip the head and achieve neat borders and easy edging. Twisting the pole, you'll be able to swap between trimming and edging modes, no fuss, no muss.
AFS™ Automatic Line Feed
The machine easily goes from precision edging to wide-range cutting and whacking. Its cutting swath measures 30 centimetres, enabling fast and efficient cutting. Even before that though, propelling the machine is the 550-watt motor. Using the E-Drive technology, the motor is able to produce 7500 revolutions per minute, powering through the toughest overgrown areas within minutes. The model's not cheap, so certain features come without saying, including the AFS™ automatic line feed. This function will be automatically sensing when the line is needed and feeding out the line from the spool without delay.
From the build angle, the machine is not that different from most BLACK + DECKER products. You have the signature orange and black paintwork. The plastic parts do not feel cheap. The pole is chrome-treated, so you won't have to worry about rust patches forming there.
Long story short, the BLACK + DECKER BESTA530-GB is hard to categorise because, even though the machine is pretty great from certain perspectives, most gardens do not need its versatile arsenal. That being said, if you need something that's equally good at trimming lawn borders and tackling massive overgrowth, this is the string trimmer to go for.
What Is a String Trimmer?
A string trimmer has many names - this tool is also called a weed whacker, weed eater, grass trimmer, and so on. As the very name indicates, this tool is used to cut grass and weeds, just like a lawn mower, but weed whackers allow you to handle steep and hard-to-reach places. Also, they are much cheaper than conventional lawn mowers and require smaller storage space. A weed eater has a long shaft with a cutting head at the end. Of course, there is an engine, a handle and a shoulder strap included to let you carry a string trimmer without a hassle.
What Features to Compare
There are many string trimmer reviews on the Internet, but making the right choice is still a challenging task for a lot of people, which is understandable considering that these reviews often provide either too much unnecessary information or too many useless details. Knowing that we've done our best to make our weed eater review maximum clear and informative so we've compared 5 best string trimmers by the core features that present the utmost importance for users.
First of all, you should decide what kind of operation you expect the tool to deliver. This is largely affected by the type of engine the tool uses. Gas powered weed eaters are quite powerful but they require fueling, meaning if you opt for this type of string trimmer, you'll need to make sure to take care of it. You can also opt for electric string trimmers, cordless (powered by batteries) or corded, depending on your particular needs. Although electric models are not as powerful as gas-powered models, you can find trimmers yielding about 1400 Watts, which brings them close to those.
The next thing to consider is usability features - using a grass trimmer should not be taxing nor should it put strain on your back, therefore it's essential to check out its conveniences, namely, whether a weed eater has an adjustable handle for comfortable use by people of different heights, a shoulder strap for carrying, a quick-start feature to save you time, and the like. If you choose a cordless electric string trimmer, make sure to check its compatibility with other batteries and find out how long it usually takes before the replacement is needed. Also, consider what additional attachments (if any) can be used with the model.
Length and Weight
Finally, the next logical issue to take into account is the length and weight of every weed whacker. If you are not really a bodybuilder, you should choose a smaller and more lightweight tools. Keep in mind that though you can adjust the length of the shaft, you still need to know the maximum length it can be extended to.
