DEWALT DW03050-XJ

Make Your Measurement Task Easier

A laser measurer is an indispensable tool for construction use, making the measurement task faster and easier. If you are unsure of which laser measure to choose from the many available options, then have a look at the DeWalt DW03050.

Dewalt is the leading manufacturer of industrial power tools and supplier of attachments, accessories, and protective clothing. The Dewalt DW03050 is an industrial power tool designed to calculate distances from one corner to another easily and accurately by using the end post corner stand-off feature.

A laser distance measurer sends out a focused pulse of light to a target and upon detecting the reflection, calculates the distance to this target with an accuracy of +/- 1.5mm in the range of 50m. The maximum distance length the DeWalt DW03050 can target is up to 165 ft making it sufficient for most tasks that need to be done in small and mid-sized premises. What we liked about the DeWalt DW03050 is that it's very convenient to hold in hand. It has a solid flat base which serves as a sturdy platform making it easier to make accurate measurements with minor to none deviations and errors in readings. Speaking of readings, the DeWalt DW03050 displays linear meter readings as well as area and volume calculations. It can subtract and/or add readings and calculate the distance in imperial and metric as per your convenience. Furthermore, since the DeWalt DW03050 uses the Pythagoras theorem, it can also calculate indirect heights. With all that, the DeWalt DW03050 is very user-friendly and convenient to use. It has a two-line backlit display which provides great visibility in all working conditions. And it has a straightforward interface that won't present any challenge even to an amateurish user holding the device in their hands for the first time in his life.

The DeWalt DW03050 laser measuring tool has an IP65 debris/water protection and an over-moulded casing, which means it can withstand and survive multiple impacts and drops that are inevitable on a job site. Thus, you can rest assured that even if you manage to drop the device from the height of 2m to the concrete floor, you won't need to buy a new one - it will survive the drop and most likely won't even crack.

Review of DEWALT DW03050-XJ Laser Distance Measurer

Why Not Use a Tape?

Unlike a traditional measure tape, a laser distance measurer wins on every count: accuracy, speed, versatility, functionality, convenience, and safety. The laser measurer will get the job done much faster than a tape – just point, click the button, and you will have the results on the display. A traditional tape usually needs more than one person to operate while a laser can be used without an assistant at the other end. The laser measurer allows making straight line measurements without bending, so there’s no risk of misreading while figuring out the intermediate marks on a standard tape measure. With the backlit display, you can use your laser measurer in poor lighting and you don’t have to worry about any obstacles. You can measure upwards without scrambling to the top of a building. These versatility and safety benefits are extremely important especially for people who often work in hazardous environments where only a laser measure can do the job.

What Is a Laser Measurer?

It is hard to imagine a construction or renovation project requiring no such measuring tool as a traditional measure tape. This tape may prove useful for measuring the length of gypsum plasterboard, a piece of a plastic pipe, and many other things. However, when it comes to larger measurements, especially such as measuring spaces and distances over 20 feet, using just a measure tape will not be enough. That's where a laser measuring device comes in.

Using a laser measuring device, you can easily measure the length and height of different surfaces as well as the area and volume of the space. On top of that, you can save these measurements to further use them for subtracting such areas as windows and doors without using a calculator. Besides, many models come Bluetooth-enabled, so you can pair them with other smart devices for quick data transferring. All of this makes this device an indispensable tool for people working on construction sites, involved in remodelling, and DIYers.

What's not less important is that a laser measurer is very easy to use. Once you point it at the needed spot and press the button, it will instantly project a laser beam there. And when the beam reaches the object, it'll be automatically reflected back to the receiver. The distance is calculated through a comparison of laser reflection with the beam sent out.

Below we describe which parameters you should consider when deciding on which laser measurer will be right for you.

Having measured and marked off spots on a wall, you can use an impact driver for fast and quality drilling.

Best Laser Measurers

What Features to Compare

Measuring Characteristics

First of all, the choice of a laser measurer will depend on the scope of work you need to do. One of the key characteristics which should be considered is an effective range of the chosen model. If a laser measurer is needed for making not too distance measurements outdoors or inside premises, models offering a range capacity from 100 to 150 ft will suffice. For small construction sites, it'll be better to opt for laser measurers working within the range up to 300 ft. While those who work on large-scale industrial or road construction projects should choose from models offering the range of 300 ft and higher. Once you've decided on the range that's best for you, think about the types of measurements you want the device to read. You don't want to pay more for extra capacity or redundant functions you will never use. Absolutely all laser measurers in this review are able to measure length, area, and volume, as well as perform the continuous measurement and store and display the last few measurements from the memory unit. More functional models may perform indirect measurements according to the Pythagorean theorem, measure angles, have a timer function and have a beep signal to inform a user when the device completes its reading. All measurements may have a varying degree of accuracy, which will depend on a number of factors. For example:

  • weather conditions, such as wind, fog, rain or snow;
  • surface the laser is being pointed at. The device's performance depends on the principle of reflection of the laser beam from the object. If the surface is rough or dark, then the reflection and precision of measurement will be inferior.
  • steadiness. To measure long distances it is best to use a tripod. The tripod will ensure maximum steadiness; while the risk of displacement of the laser beam from the desired object will be reduced to zero.

Based on this, we can conclude that the ideal conditions for using a laser measurer are premises with very smooth and light surfaces. The device needs to be as steady as possible, whether it is a tripod or a firm grip of a user - it depends. Besides, don't forget to consider the duration of battery life, different models can perform from 3000 up to 30 000 single measurements per charge.

Additional Features

Besides the main functions, some laser measures may have additional features. Let's consider one of the most useful - built-in Bluetooth. With its help, you may sync the measurer with smart devices and all measurement data will be transferred to the installed application. In addition, such applications have the ability to design a new floor plan for a room or overlay lines and measurements on any object within a picture. Let's proceed to the display. Some models are equipped with a backlight which enables users to see in low or dim light conditions. The matrix can be either monochrome or coloured. In some models, screens can change their orientation depending on the rotation of the device. As we've said, not all of the models have a socket for tripods. Therefore once you determined the scope of work, you may consider choosing a model with a socket. One of the special features is a flip-out end piece, located at the bottom of the device. The end piece allows performing measurements not only from flat surfaces but also from various deepenings and corners of a room, which comes especially handy when measuring its diagonal. In the end, consider using additional accessories, such as a reflective target plate or special laser glasses. The target plate is needed when working with uneven or dark surfaces, and laser glasses will help improve the visibility of the laser beam and see a laser dot on the object in dim or too bright conditions.

Did you know?

A laser measuring device is more than just a light ray, it's one of the most versatile inventions of the present time. A laser measure works by bouncing off a laser light from the designated target. The time it takes to return to the unit translates into the measurement. We are surrounded by laser applications in our everyday life. They are in our phones, laser printers, computer mice, optical disk drives, barcode scanners, children’s toys, DNA sequencing instruments, and etc. They are widely used in eye surgery, skin treatments, law enforcement and military devices. Have a look at fascinating facts about laser measurers that you may not have known.

  • The laser was created in 1960 by Theodore Maiman. It was based on work by Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes. The term is an abbreviation for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”.
  • The maser was the forerunner to the laser. It was based on the principle of stimulated emission by Albert Einstein.
  • Lasers are labelled with a number of a safety class, which indicates different levels of danger.
  • The most powerful laser on Earth has the same power as a hydrogen bomb.
  • The strength of first lasers used to be measured in “gillettes” - a number of razor blades a beam is able to break through.
  • The laser light is more parallel than other light sources and every part of the beam has nearly exact direction, so it diverges very little.
  • By using lasers, it’s possible to obtain DNA codes genetic information from a molecule.
  • The most powerful laser (1.25 PWs) was recorded in 1996 in the Californian laboratory.
  • In 1969 astronauts used a laser for determining the distance between the moon and Earth.
  • Laser tag was created in the 1970s as a training for the U.S. Army. Nowadays, laser tag (a game played with guns firing infrared beams) is used for entertainment.
  • Although some lasers are hotter than the sun’s surface, they can be used to cool atoms in combination with a magnetic field.
  • A laser beam can engrave an individual serial number on a diamond, which is the world's hardest natural substance.
  • There is a laser called “breathalyzer” that can detect diabetes and cancer. Lasers are used to destroy tumours and remove hair. Broken bones will heal faster when using focused laser beams.
  • Lasers are used in almost every DIY tool.
  • Lasers in CD and DVD players are considered low-level ones (5 mW and 100 mW in strength).
  • Lasers are used in police and security operations. Fingerprint scanning takes seconds.
Today, a large variety of improved laser types are produced for different goals and they are extensively used in a great variety of industries and professions.

FAQ:

Q: How does a laser measurer work?
A: Once you turn on a laser measure, target the red laser beam to the object you need. This is a faster method of measuring the distance compared to using a tape measure.

Q: Where is a laser measurer used?
A: Laser measurers have a variety of applications. They are used by real estate agents, surveyors, contractors, painters, window and carpet installers, and anyone who needs to measure the distance between two points.

Q: What's the difference between a laser measure and a rangefinder?
A: A rangefinder is usually used for measuring longer distances to find the approximate distance. They are used in golfing, hunting, and forestry applications. The laser measures are mainly used for shorter distances and for occasions when accuracy is important.

Q: Can a laser measuring device measure a moving target?
A: Depending on the speed of the target, the measured distance will be the mean value between the distance at the start and the end of the measurement process.

Q: Does my laser measurer require recalibration?
A: Yes, it’s important to get the laser measurer recalibrated to improve its accuracy.

Q: Does dust affect a laser measurer?
A: It depends on the dust concentration. If dust overcasts the laser beam, it will be difficult to track the beam on the other object and may lead to a negative effect on the measurement. In extreme dust conditions, measurements can be difficult because of the laser beam reflection. So, it requires regular clean up to keep it operating properly.

Q: Can a laser measurer damage my eyes?
A: Some people are concerned about the safety of their eyes when using a laser measure. The laser may cause eye damage, but it primarily depends on the laser class. The majority of laser measurers are classified under class II, which uses a lower power, making the laser less hazardous. However, it’s not recommended to stare directly into the laser dot source.

Q: What are the benefits of a laser distance measurer?
A: - Provides measurement accuracy. A laser distance measurer measures the straight line distance without the bend which generally occurs in traditional tape measures.

- Prevents measurement errors. It’s more convenient to read the display on a laser measurer than a tape measure which should be always held in the measuring position. Most laser measuring devices let the user choose the units of measure without the need to convert units - this helps eliminates many measurements errors that come from incorrect conversion. Laser measurers show the measured value, so you don’t have to figure out those tiny dash marks on a measure tape.

- Doesn’t require an assistant to take measurements. Traditional tape measures require someone to hold the other end of the tape. Lasers are just aimed at a target like a door, wall, pole, or stake, thus can be taken by one person.

- Measures hard-to-reach measurements. To measure the height of the ceiling you need to set the device on the floor and aim it at the ceiling. You can also take measurements in tight quarters and across the water.

- Saves time. Using a laser measuring tool is much faster than a tape measure. All you need is to hold the device against a wall aiming it at the opposite side of the wall and click the button. If the measured area is crowded with equipment or furniture, the time saving for typical measuring jobs is greater.
