What Is a Hoverboard?

We call them "hoverboards" although they are not the exact replicas of those encountered by Marty McFly in his trip to 2015 from 1985. Sadly, the real future still has to offer us a board capable of travelling long distances without wheels at all. All we have are these so-called hoverboards that are, in fact, self-balancing scooters or self-balancing two-wheeled boards. So what are they?

Visually, these hoverboards are simple compact boards with two big wheels at the sides. Inside, they have hidden motors like electric bikes that are spurred into movement by sensors that "feel" you step on the board. The direction is set by you moving your body. It may seem similar to a skateboard but it is not, really. Not that similar. For starters, it needs less physical efforts to move, due to a motor, and is more versatile when it comes to challenging terrains.

When used the right way, a hoverboard is a pretty safe and smart device, even at high speeds. It responds to the slightest shift of your body and follows the direction you set. It is also quite compact and durable when it comes to temperature fluctuations. Finally, it is a trendy toy today, everyone wants one.

Note: Riding a hoverboard is illegal on public roads and pavements in the UK, so it's a no-no purchase unless you have a chance to play with it on a private property and have the permission from the owner.

What Features to Compare

Targeted Users

Same as any other personal means of transportation, hoverboards have their own restrictions in use. Some models have age limitations and others can only support users within a certain weight range. Bottom limits are created to keep small children away as hoverboards can reach quite some speeds and therefore will be difficult to control for a kid. Upper boundaries generally only deal with weight and mean that the materials your board is made of have durability limits. The latter are fairly high, though, so no worries if you are a bit plus size. The said limitations are usually outlined by each manufacturer for each model. All-in-all, bigger wheels allow more load but there are specific cases, too.

Power

Hoverboards are powered by motors installed in the wheels. However, motor power here does not exactly equal speed; the max speed is pre-programmed and limited at the development stage in order to make the device safer. The high-power motor will be an advantage for users whose weight is closer to the upper limit.

Also, power might become an issue if you tend to climb hills on your hoverboard (but keep in mind that steep hills are often off-limits for this particular transportation method).

Battery

Being an electric device, hoverboard needs the energy to operate. And being a portable item, it has a battery. The energy issue is fairly simple—the more capacity there is in your board's battery the longer its operational time is. But high-capacity batteries are also those that take more time to charge.

Review of Bluefin 8" Drifter Swegway

All for Your Comfort

Talking about the ergonomics and usability of this Swegway hoverboard, it should be mentioned that the manufacturer thoughtfully included a waterproof carrying bag in the set. If you need to transport your board, this bag will be a real find. First of all, carrying the board will be more comfortable, and, second, the device will be securely protected from external damage. Also, the carry bag will be helpful for storing the hoverboard when you are not using it.

Another advantage of this model is the built-in Bluetooth speakers which give you an opportunity to take your favourite songs with you when you ride. The speakers produce quite clear and loud sound. Connecting your mobile phone or another gadget to the hoverboard will take only a few seconds—just follow the voice prompts and you will pair devices with no problems at all.

If you can not imagine your life without music even when you are hiking or cycling, then you will probably be interested in portable Bluetooth speakers. They will enable you to listen to your favourite tracks wherever you are.

Razor Hovertrax 2.0

All the Best for You

The Razor Hovertrax 2.0 is a hoverboard that meets all and any criteria for comfortable and reliable riding inside the house as well as outside (if you have the permission). Rubber tires are of high quality and do not slide even on the smoothest surface, and that has an overall positive effect on the user's safety. The said tires are covering aluminium discs sturdy enough to hold the weight of up to 220 lbs.

Note that the Razor Hovertrax 2.0 is not exactly lightweight to carry around for hours, its weight is slightly over 12 kg; your little kid will probably find it too heavy to lift. However, the market is full of special backpacks for hoverboards where you can put your Hovertrax to carry it on your back or shoulder. This way, it will seem lighter.

Review of Razor Hovertrax 2.0

Best Learner's Board

For those new to boarding in general and hoverboarding in particular, the Razor Hovertrax 2.0 is the best choice thanks to its EverBalance technology. This feature makes mounting and riding your board a cakewalk, smooth and easy even at the first try.

To set the direction you want to move in, just use your feet or even toes (unlike Segway where you need to move your whole body). It might require a bit of training and getting used to but the result is worth it, you will enjoy flawless riding immensely.

Razor Hovertrax 2.0 in the use

Safety First

Hoverboards that are used outside might be prone to wear more than those used at home only, and Razor knows it. That's why the Hovertrax 2.0 has a sturdy casing to hide and protect all the vulnerable parts from potential damage. Even the wheels have fender bumpers.

The sensors will help you keep all the dangerous details in check. For example, when you ride too bumpy terrain, you will feel vibration to remind you of the need to follow the safety rules. The same vibration will warn you if you try to lift the hoverboard while it's on; this way, you will save the battery life and prolong the operational time (which, by the way, is approximately an hour of intensive use).

Oldschool

Hoverboards today are mostly a means of commuting either on the streets or inside a house, at least, in some countries. Since the UK law limits the former, if you seek another option you might want to look through longboards. These long skateboards need a bit more effort than hoverboards to get them to move but they are generally allowed in more places as the world is long used to them. Also, with some training, you can learn nice tricks!

Review of Bluefin 6.5" Classic Swegway

Be a Cool Guy

The Bluefin company offers a fairly good choice of colours for this model. In particular, you can take a black, blue, chrome blue (really eye-catching), red, white, or chrome gold model. However, it should be noted that the gold chrome hoverboard will cost a little more than other models. But money is not that important thing when it comes to style, fashion, and distinctness, agree?

The front LED lights ensure perfect illumination and make you clearly visible at night. In addition, it contributes to the extraordinary appearance of the board.

This machine is pretty easy to manage. All the detailed information is given in the manual (comes in the kit) in English, so you will have no problems at all. Here are some features we've picked up from it:

  • The device tells you when the battery runs out;
  • When speed is above 10 km/h, the board will inform you;
  • If one of the wheels is out of order, the appliance stops automatically;
  • The hoverboard indicates when it is fully charged and should be disconnected from the network;
  • When climbing a slope above 15 degrees, the device stops.

Follow the instruction and be careful with your device and it will serve you for many years.

Win the Race

With its impressive looks and extraordinary design, Cobra is much bigger than the Classic model from Bluefin. The dimensions of this board are 71 x 27.5 x 27 cm. Actually, it is one of the biggest models the Bluefin company produces. Being fairly large and strong, this hoverboard is able to withstand the load capacity of up to 120 kg. The Cobra model is available in three colour solutions, including extra modern and bright graffiti.

In addition to awesome appearance, this device offers the same high performance and quality components as other models from the company. In particular, the German-designed durable motors and the long-lasting UK certified Samsung Lithium-ion battery are used in all the "vehicles" from Bluefin, which explains their great capabilities. Riding this immense board, you will feel an excellent combination of stunning design and spectacular performance.

FAQ:

Q: Do hoverboards really explode?
A:
They used to when first launched, yes. This is the reality and we need to face it. But the problem was acknowledged and the solution found, the batteries were upgraded to be safer and a certificate was created to evaluate them. Please only buy boards with UL 2272 Certificate. This is a certificate that is only given to the electric devices that meet very strict requirements regarding safety. All the hoverboards in our list have this certificate.

Q: How fast can I go on a hoverboard?
A:
Generally, self-balancing scooters offer speed from 6 to 10 miles per hour although there are models that can go at 13 mph. But when you consider this parameter, note that the speed you see on the board or at the website selling it is the top speed under perfect conditions. That is, smooth surface at 0°. If you go up a small hill or over bumps, the speed drops.

Q: What is the weight limit?
A:
Most manufacturers make their hoverboards able to hold up to 220 lbs of weight, and some also establish lower limits at which the board won’t recognize a too light rider. The latter is made to keep small kids away.

Q: Are these waterproof?
A:
Depends on how you define “waterproof”. If you want to go swimming with a hoverboard, please don’t. Even a puddle will most probably be a death of your board so no riding in or after a heavy rain. But if you look carefully, you’ll see IP54 certified ones; this means the board is splash-proof and will survive a little drizzle.

Q: Why do I need Bluetooth one?
A:
You don’t if you are not into fancy features. Bluetooth connectivity is mostly used to either control the board remotely (lock it, set alarms, play with it by making it “dance” around empty) or play music through board’s speakers. If you want a board to simply ride it, you may opt for a bit cheaper one without extras.
