Well-Thought-Out Construction

The Katsu Tools 481509 is a capable unit, there's very little doubt about that. First and foremost, what separates this model from 9/10 oil extractors is its maximum capacity. Pushing 9 litres, this unit can extract more oil at a time than most. Plus, the model works with all engine types, transmission, and lubricating oils from industrial machinery, stationary engines, marine engines, motorbikes, and cars. Besides oil, the unit is compatible with most low-viscosity fluids.

But, from where we're standing, the model's biggest strength is its construction. And we're not necessarily talking about the ABS body with aluminium inflators. No, they're important as well, but we're not quite talking about them. We're talking about the wide base that keeps the model stable so that you don't have to worry about this unit tipping over during operation. We're also talking about the ergonomic pump handle that you can hold with two hands without feeling somehow inconvenienced. To add more, featuring rubberised padding, the handle absorbs pressure and makes sure that even sweaty or wet hands do not slip during pumping.

Setting these details aside, this oil extractor's made from composite materials, which is nothing new these days. The unit measures 34 x 27 x 66.5 centimetres, which is a little above the norm but, considering its 9-litre capacity, the size's actually pretty compact. Likewise, the model weighs ~4.3 kilogrammes, a bit above average but adequate considering the size and capacity.

More Compatible Draining Items

The attributes like the automatic overflow prevention design and the quick-drain pour spout are obligatory at this price point, so we will not be focusing on them. We also won't be focusing on the hose storage unit, though it is quite convenient.

We will, however, focus on the three different probes that come with this unit, if only a little. With these probes, the model can work with most draining items, including fish tanks, cisterns, sinks, basins, baths, and more. Apart from that, the suction port measures 32 millimetres and will let you switch between these probes with relative ease.

The one weak link here is that the housing does not incorporate markings on the sides, so you cannot find out the oil quantity that you've removed at a glance. Barring this little mistake, the Katsu Tools 481509 will make sure you can drain oil from most vehicles and machinery pieces with as little effort as possible.

Great Price-Capacity Ratio

The PetHot C11902 is a little more humble than the previous piece but, compared to the majority of oil extractors, this model is far from modest. No, stretching its maximum capacity 7 litres, this is one roomy unit. Sure, its capacity is not quite as huge as the previous model's since that one is sitting at 9 litres. But, first, this unit is 50% more affordable, so the price-capacity ratio is more attractive here. Second, besides being more affordable, this model has its advantages as well. To name one, the transparent hose enables visual inspection, letting you observe how the fluid is being extracted. Furthermore, the unit offers extra hose placement, enabling practical storage and transportation.

Of course, the model also has its flaws. On the one hand, we appreciate the tough metal pedal that this unit integrates, letting you secure the tank during use. But, despite this pedal, the model will feel unstable on uneven surfaces. What we're saying is that the unit could use non-skid feet next time.

Aside from that, we have no qualms with this product, not one. Its working pressure covers 70 - 170 PSI, which is more than respectable. The hose measures 91 centimetres, so you'll have no problems accessing hard-to-reach areas without moving the unit. The 4 dipstick tubes that are shipped with the package are sitting at the same length, with diameters reaching 4, 6, 8, and 10 millimetres. Using these tubes, the unit can extract fluids from cars, bikes, marine engines, heavy machinery, fish tanks, baths, basins, cisterns, sinks, and so forth. Other than engine oil, the model can remove coolants, brake fluid, transmission fluids, and more.

Ergonomic Grip

Appearance-wise, the unit's low-profile design enables easy extraction. At 27 x 25 x 68 centimetres, the model does not quite land among the most space-saving oil extractors but, taking the capacity into account, the size is quite modest. The manual oil suction pump that this unit incorporates features an ergonomic grip, which means you can pump without using gloves and without experiencing discomfort during prolonged use. Last but not necessarily least, the package includes an instruction manual, so you can always consult it when issues arise.

All things considered, when some fluid requires pumping, going with the PetHot C11902 will seldom prove the wrong choice. Its price-capacity ratio is excellent and the construction is tough yet convenient across the board.

No Complications

The Silverline 104616 eliminates complications. With oil extractors, the issue usually lies with connecting the tubes and tightening the hoops that come with the unit. This is not the case here. Quite the opposite, the model enables mess- and hassle-free oil change. The pump here is a little narrow, meaning that the unit is not necessarily chummy with the fastest oil extractors, but taking into account its low-capacity tank, the speed suffices. At 4 litres, the tank that this model uses will let you work with cars and even industrial machinery but it is more suitable for machines like petrol lawn mowers. Removing ~4 litres will take you somewhere around 30 minutes, assuming you do not pump like a maniac.

Of course, forgetting oil, the unit can extract most low-viscosity fluids (including transmission fluids and steering fluids) through oil fillers or dipstick holes. The included 2 dipstick tubes measure 1.3 metres and 1 metre, so you will not feel especially tied and can place the unit pretty much anywhere you want around the fluid source during extraction. Made from heavy-duty PVC, these tubes can handle considerable and prolonged pressure, meaning that there's a pretty good chance they will last at least a few years.

Easy Pumping

Where the oil extractor's construction is concerned, the unit's crafted from high-quality plastic, preventing the body from tearing up, leaking, or deforming eventually. Some things here are the same that you'll see on most low-capacity extractors, such as the removable pump that enables clean storage and hassle-free transportation. Some are less prevalent, like the anti-spill caps that arrive with the unit. Thanks to these caps, you can move a full tank without worrying about spilling. Other than these 2 caps, the package also provides a flow control clip, preventing overflowing.

But the part that we like the most about this portable unit is the pump. There's no handle, no grip. You can press the pump down without even using fingers, which is pretty brilliant since you'll sometimes spend 20-30 minutes pumping. That being said, we also have nothing against the side handle, enabling one-handed relocation even when the tank is filled to the brim.

Long story short, there are very few people that will not benefit from the Silverline 104616. Plus, at ~22 x 23 x 24 centimetres, the model will take up almost no space in the garage or garden shed, especially when you remove the pump.

A Thorough Kit

The Briggs and Stratton 992423 follows the common playbook that's deployed amongst almost all low-capacity oil extractors. To start with, every part here is removable, hence the people behind this product dubbing it an oil removal kit. The pump is removable, the funnel is removable, and, needless to say, the tubes are removable.

With this package, you receive only 1 tube, which is a little unfortunate considering that the kit from Silverline provides you with 2 tubes and comes at the same price point. On the plus side, the pump on this model is less narrow, so you'll be wasting less time extracting fluids. Besides that, the models' construction is practically identical, including the pump that can be pressed even without grabbing it.

The unit's capacity measures the same 4 litres, meaning that the model is fine with lawn care tools (chainsaws, lawn mowers, edgers, you name 'em and passenger cars but draining trucks or industrial machinery with this one will prove a little tiresome, to say the least, unless these industrial machinery pieces do not produce more than 4 litres of excess fluids.

While we're not crazy about the tube quantity, the quality is not lacking. On the contrary, the provided tube can withstand respectable pressure and will be alright with the majority of low-viscosity fluids, including water, brake fluids, coolants, transmission fluids, power steering fluids, and so forth.

No Fuss, No Muss, No Mess

Removing the tube from the equation, the package also offers you a convenient funnel that will let you change oil without spilling. Likewise, the quick-drain pour spout will allow you to pour the fluid out in a few seconds without creating a mess.

Measuring 22 x 23 x 24 centimetres, the model is shed space-friendly. And, again, the pump is removable, so storing this oil removal kit will seldom prove challenging. What will also prove not challenging is spill-free relocation. Owing to the anti-spill caps, you can carry the unit without spilling one drop. What's more, the integrated handle will let you carry this oil extractor with 1 hand without feeling like you're lugging a tonne.

From a build perspective, the model is made from strong polyethene, meaning that the unit can handle consistent and prolonged use without causing problems. So, provided that consistent and prolonged low-volume use is something that you want and/or need, the Briggs and Stratton 992423 should fit your fill just right.

No Manual Labour

Despite claiming the last spot, the MANNEW 0829 is not the worst oil extractor within this lineup. No, the model is just different. First things first, it is an electric, 12V unit that draws and outputs 60W with battery clamps. Needless to say, with its electric nature come certain benefits as well as certain drawbacks. Connecting the tubes to the pump and tightening the hoops on them is tiresome. Unlike manual models, the unit draws electricity, so the product will cost a little more long-term than its manual peers (not much though since 60 watts is virtually nothing).

The benefits? To begin with, the model does the pumping for you, so you don't have to stand there and push the pump up and down for 15-30 minutes straight, which is not a terrible deal in our book. With motor oils (between 40 and 60 degrees Celcius), the flow rate reaches 1 litre per minute. With diesel oil, the flow rate is around 250 litres per hour.

To continue, aside from extracting fluids, this unit can also dispense them, enabling siphoning and transferring automotive fluids from cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, quad bikes, marines, forklifts, tractors, lawn mowers, generators, snow mowers, and more to different cars, marines, farm machinery, plant equipment, and so forth. With its self-priming mechanism, pumping various fluids is much less difficult than with manual pumps. All you have to do is place the inlet/outlet hoses at the appropriate positions, connect the clamps to the battery, and press the one button this unit has.

Preventing Overheating

Examining the model's construction, the most important puzzle piece is the pure copper motor, enabling not just quick but also clean oil changes. Plus, incorporating pure copper also makes the model able to work for hours without overheating. Likewise, made from plastic and aluminium, the housing is pretty good at dissipating heat, making sure that the internal components do not reach dangerous temperatures. Leaving the motor and the housing behind, what also contributes to the construction cause is the plastic line will have no issues fitting oil tubes.

Wrapping the proverbial (and literal) package, to go with the oil extractor, you're shipped a 1.2-metre inlet tube and a 1.5-metre outlet tube that enable extracting and dispensing fluids respectively. Plus, you'll also receive 2 hoops.

In short, if you're not crazy about manual labour, the MANNEW 0829 is the model for you.

What Is an Oil Extractor?

Car engine maintenance can be a hard and risky business. With all of the different things that can go wrong with an engine, as well as the inherent dangers that accompany such problems, fixing problems with a car of any type can be a thankless job. Whether you are a professional or hobbyist mechanic, having the right tools for fixing problems is an absolute must. One of the tools that should be in the arsenal of any mechanic is an oil extractor, a device that is used to pump out old oil from an engine.

Changing oil in a car is usually a matter of removing the oil pan and letting the oil drain from the crankcase. However, there are times when oil (especially really old, cheap oil) gets clumped up and causes a blockage, preventing all of the old oil from being able to drain properly. At other times, you may come across a car that makes it nearly impossible to quickly and easily change the oil without an entire inventory of tools. In these cases, an oil extractor can help remove all of the old oil along with any sludge that may be in there, making oil changes a much easier procedure. On top of that, oil extractors can also be used for easily replacing other car fluids, such as antifreeze and brake fluid.

If you are trying to find the best oil extractor to greatly speed up and simplify the process of oil changes, take a look at some of the best motor oils to use with your car.

What Features to Compare

Oil extractors come in a large number of varieties, but almost all of the different models serve the same primary purpose - to extract oil from a car engine. Beyond this primary purpose, the different characteristics and capabilities of each model can differ greatly. Some will serve more purposes than just extracting oil, while others are pretty bare-bones models with the task of extracting oil its one and only use. Of course, this great variety in the different models can sometimes cause confusion for those looking for an oil extractor, but being aware of the different characteristics and capabilities, such as the ones listed below, will greatly help in narrowing the field for finding the best oil extractor for your needs.

Type

The first thing to pay attention to is the type of oil extractor a particular model is. The two main types available are mechanical, which typically rely on manual pumping for extracting the oil, or Pneumatic, which typically rely on a separate air compressor connected to it to power the pump. Some models may include both mechanical and pneumatic capabilities, so if you want the latter, make sure that the model you choose supports it.

Usage

Another important capability to pay attention to is the usage of the device. Almost all oil extractors are made to extract oil from a car engine, some may also include the capability to dispense oil as well. Those who need both capabilities would be well served in going for a model that supports these usages.

Max Capacity

The max capacity of the oil reservoir is an important characteristic to be aware of with any oil extractor pump that you purchase. This capacity will show just how much oil the extractor's reservoir can hold before it needs to be emptied. If you are aware of your car's oil capacity, it's best to find an oil extractor that supports no less than that same capacity, otherwise, you'll find the process of extracting oil to be a bit more tedious and time-consuming than it would otherwise be.

Extras

Finally, pay attention to the extras that are included with any oil extractor. These extras can include a wide number of different features, such as a quick drain pour spout, dipstick tubes, stabilizers for the device to keep it upright during use, and even overflow prevention capabilities that will keep excess out from spilling out should you reach the maximum capacity of the oil reservoir. If any of these extra features are ones that you will want or need, then make sure whichever model that you choose includes them, ensuring that you get the best fluid evacuator.

Did you know?

Changing Oil with An Oil Extractor

There's a lot to be said about how to properly change the oil in your car or another vehicle. Usually, changing oil in a car involves having to get underneath the vehicle, remove the oil pan, change the oil filter, and drain out all of the old oil before having to replace everything and put in new oil. It's a long and sometimes complicated process that isn't quite the easiest thing in the world to do, and with how some cars are made, it can sometimes be extremely difficult. Of course, there is always the option of taking your vehicle to a service centre and having professionals do it for you, but having this done regularly can be expensive.

Some people just prefer to change their own oil, yet don't have the patience or even the proper facilities for doing it the "proper" way. Using an oil extractor to remove the old oil can really save a lot of time and energy, but even so, how exactly is this done? Below are some simple instructions for changing your vehicle's oil with an oil extractor.

How to Operate the Extractor

When you have finally selected the right oil extractor, you can typically operate it manually, unless you have a pneumatic type. However, the majority of oil extractors on the market, as well as most of the ones reviewed above, are manual, so these instructions will apply only to manual oil extractors.

First things first - you need to attach your dipstick tube to your extractor. Almost all extractors come with dipstick tubes, and some with multiple tubes of varying sizes. Whichever is the case, make sure your dipstick tube is long enough to reach down to the bottom of your car's oil pan while still allowing your oil extractor to sit steadily on a flat surface. The dipstick tube is meant to feed into the oil dipstick slot on your vehicle's engine. If you're unsure of how far down it needs to go, remove the dipstick from the slot, line it up with the end of the tube that will go into the oil pan, and mark off the other end of the tube, which should show where it will line up with the dipstick slot opening. This will help you in measuring how far down to put the tube.

Once you have the tube in the oil pan, you should then attach a tube clamp (if included). Once the tube clamp is attached, or the valve on the extractor is closed, make sure that all other openings on the extractor are secured tightly and then start pumping the handle. The pumping action of the handle should create a tight vacuum inside of the extraction tank, which will then provide the suction necessary to create the flow of fluids from the engine into the tank. Once enough of a vacuum is created, loosen the clamp or open the valve, and the extraction process should begin. The length of time that the extraction process will take will depend on a number of factors, including the size of the dipstick tube's diameter, the total amount of fluid being extracted, and even the viscosity of the fluid. Typically, fluids with a lower viscosity will take much less time than those with a higher viscosity, meaning that high viscosity oil will generally take more than just a few minutes.

Once the extraction is finished and the dipstick tube is clear of fluids, close the valve on your extractor, remove the dipstick tube, and then you can safely dispose of the extracted fluids. As you can see, using an oil extractor can greatly simplify the process of changing your vehicle's oil!
